Installing a glass sliding wall is a manageable DIY job. You will need a helper, standard tools and about half a day. Below we cover the complete installation process: from preparation to the final adjustments.
Tools Needed
- Cordless drill with drill bits
- Spirit level
- Tape measure (5 metres)
- Phillips screwdriver
- Silicone sealant + caulking gun
- Plumb line (optional)
- Suction cups for glass panels (recommended)
- Helper (glass panels are heavy!)
⚠️ Important: Glass panels are heavy (approximately 40–50 kg per panel). Always lift with two people and use suction cups. Wear safety gloves.
Installation in 6 Steps
Step 1: Preparation and Inspection
Upon receipt, check that all parts are present and undamaged. Lay out the top rail, bottom rail, glass panels, wheels, screws and accessories separately. Measure the opening again carefully. Ensure the floor is clean and flat.
Step 2: Attach Side Profiles
First attach the side profiles to both sides of the opening. Ensure they are perfectly level and square. Mark the drill holes, pre-drill and secure the profiles firmly with the correct plugs and screws depending on the surface (wood, steel or concrete).
Step 3: Mount the Top Rail
The top rail is attached to the upper side of the opening. Hold the rail in position and mark the drill holes. Use a spirit level to ensure the rail is 100% horizontal — this is crucial for smooth sliding.
Pre-drill, insert plugs and tighten screws. Secure at least every 40 cm.
💡 Tip: When mounting on a steel beam, use self-tapping metal screws.
Step 4: Place the Bottom Rail
Place the bottom rail on the floor or threshold, exactly below the top rail. Use a spirit level or plumb line to determine the correct alignment.
The bottom rail can be placed loose, but securing is recommended for stability.
Step 5: Place and Align Glass Panels
Place the glass panels one by one. Lift the panel with two people and carefully place the glass first into the top rail. Then gently lower the panel so the wheels at the bottom sit neatly on the tracks of the bottom rail.
⚠️ Note: Each panel must be placed in the correct track. Work carefully to prevent damage.
Step 6: Finishing and Sealing
Finish the installation by applying silicone sealant where the rails meet the wall or construction, to prevent water ingress.
Mount the handles, locks and brushes (draft strips). Test all panels by sliding them open and closed multiple times.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Top rail not level: This is the most common mistake. A crooked top rail causes panels to slide unevenly.
- Too few fixing points: Secure the top rail at least every 40 cm. Too few screws can cause sagging.
- Panels in wrong track: Check which panel goes in which track when hanging.
- No silicone sealing: Without sealing, water can leak along the rails. Always seal the transitions.
- Working alone: Never try to lift glass panels alone. The risk of breakage and injury is too high.
Installation Time and Difficulty
With two people, the installation of an average sliding wall (3–5 rails) takes about 3 to 5 hours. Larger systems (6–7 rails) can take a full day.
