Measuring for a Glass Sliding Wall

Step by step to the right measurements

A few millimetres difference when measuring can cause problems during installation. So take a moment to measure carefully. Below you will find exactly what to measure and which mistakes to avoid.

Tools for Measuring

  • Tape measure: At least 5 metres, preferably steel (more accurate than fabric).
  • Spirit level: To check the levelness of floor and ceiling. A long spirit level (100 cm) is ideal.
  • Pen and paper: Note all measurements immediately. Make a sketch of the opening.
  • Laser distance meter (optional): For extra accurate measurements.

Measuring in 5 Steps

  1. Step 1: Measure Width

Measure the width of the opening at three points: top, middle and bottom. Note all three measurements. The smallest measurement determines the width. Always measure from inner wall to inner wall.

💡 Tip: Always measure in millimetres for maximum accuracy.

  2. Step 2: Measure Height

Measure the height at three points: left, middle and right. Measure from the top of the finished floor (or threshold) to the bottom of the beam where the top rail will be attached. Note the smallest measurement.

  3. Step 3: Check Levelness

Place the spirit level on the floor where the bottom rail will go. Is the floor level? Repeat for the top beam. If the floor deviates more than 10 mm, correct this before installation.

  4. Step 4: Note Obstacles

Walk along the entire opening and look for obstacles: electrical cables, water pipes, rain pipes, exterior lighting, protruding stones. Note the position and size of each obstacle.

💡 Which rail system fits your width? 2-rail (140–203 cm), 3-rail (200–300 cm), 4-rail (280–403 cm), 5-rail (370–503 cm), 6-rail (450–603 cm) or 7-rail (535–700 cm). Wider than 700 cm? A double system is used.

Common Measurement Mistakes

  • Measuring at only one point: Always measure at three points. Walls and floors are rarely perfect.
  • Holding tape measure at an angle: Always hold the tape measure horizontally or vertically. An angled tape measure gives a measurement that is too large.
  • Rounding up: Always round down or use the exact measurement.
  • Forgetting floor covering: Always measure the height from the finished floor level. If you are still going to lay tiles, take this into account.
